Why you must know Q-without-U words
The Q tile is worth 10 points but there are only 4 U tiles in the game. In a competitive match, your opponent may play all four U tiles before you get a chance to play Q in a word like QUEEN or QUIZ. Without knowing Q-without-U words, you're stuck — forced to trade or hold the tile until endgame and potentially lose points.
Players who know even just QI turn the Q from a liability into a reliable 11-point play. Players who know the full list below have a weapon every game.
Most important to memorize: QI, QOPH, QAT, QANAT, TRANQ, CINQ. These cover the most common board situations — short words for tight spots, longer words for open boards.

Strategy: when and how to use Q-without-U words
QI on triple-letter is 30 points
QI placed so the Q lands on a triple-letter square scores 30 points for two tiles. This is one of the highest-efficiency plays in Scrabble.
TRANQ ends in Q — rare and valuable
Words that end in Q are extremely rare and useful because they can hook onto open I or A tiles on the board to form TRANQI or TRANQA — wait, actually Q at word end means it can't extend. Use it to block a premium square.
Know QI + QOPH = cover every rack
If you know QI and QOPH, you can play Q without U in almost any rack situation — short boards, tight corners, open centers.
QI hooks onto existing words
If there's an I on the board, playing Q perpendicular to it (to form QI as a two-letter cross) is often a legal and powerful play that surprises opponents.
